Small Work: Group Narrative Panel

Create three paratactic sentences using this structure:
·                I believe in "_____________".
·                I "verb" + "subject".
·                The "noun" + (verb) "adjective".

I believe in nothing

The fan ran up the stairs

I adore you

These are the sentence we chose during the picking. We were lined up in three lines to receive a paper that we would later crate a narrative for using the text given.

You were then put into a group of 3 - 4 people, each of whom had a sentence.  You were asked to order your paratactic poem, and were then given an in-class assignment:
1) Each person must make a list of 5 mood words relating to their sentence.
Mood:
- Refreshed
-Tired
-Relaxed
-Sleepy
-Energetic

2) Each person must make a list of 5 material qualities relating to their sentence.
Material qualities:
-Electrical wires
-WD40
-Wood
-Plastic
Running Shoes

3) Renegotiate your poem based on the mood words and material qualities.

4) The group must decide the narrative/content/story, and storyboard 3 different possibilities.  Each storyboard has three thumbnails, one for each sentence, for a total of 9 thumbnails in total.
This exercise will culminate in a comic/narrative.  Each group member is responsible for one 8.5" x 11" panel (2D--this size requirement is strict), which should have a correlating thumbnail in your chosen storyboard.  The three/four panels together will be a complete comic/narrative.
5) After, the groups will have the work to present to the class, student will chose which narrative group's artwork they liked (vote).

Narrative:
The narrative is about an artist who is at the peak of their career, successful and their artwork is
When the artist least expects it, they have an accident leading to being hospitalized in a coma for a period of time. During the time the artist is in the coma, he has a dream about being the art studio creating artwork about nothingness (existential state of mind, emotions/feelings).Within the dream  the artist thinks to himself that everything around him is nothingness(nothingness). When the artist awakes from the coma, he first sees an oscillating fan and a loved one by his bedside. realizes that this loved one has been looking after and caring for him the whole time (adoration). The fan plays the role in appearing in every scene of the narrative as an ever-present passing wind through.

Invisible city- Calvino: four different materials

Invisible City- this assignment required us to identify four different materials that convey something about the mood or tone of the Calvino City you chose. Make an exploratory work with each of those four materials in which you attempt to use and emphasize the material qualities to present that mood or tone to a viewer. If 2-D, these explorations need to be 8" X 10"minimum. If 3-D, these explorations must be no smaller than a 6" cubic volume.

Twin Cities: Sophronia

"The city of Sophronia is made up of two half-cities. In one there is the great roller coaster with its steep humps, the carousel with its chain spokes, the Ferris wheel of spinning cages, the death-ride with crouching motorcyclists, the big top with the clump of trapezes hanging in the middle. The other half-city is of stone and marble and cement, with the bank, the factories, the palaces, the slaughterhouse, the school, and all the rest. One of the half-cities is permanent, the other is temporary, and when the period of its sojourn is over, they uproot it, dismantle it, and take it off, transplanting it to the vacant lots of another half-city.

And so every year the day comes when the workmen remove the marble pediments, lower the stone walls, the cement pylons, take down the Ministry, the monument, the docks, the petroleum refinery, the hospital, load them on trailers, to follow from stand to stand their annual itinerary. Here remains the half-Sophronia of the shooting-galleries and the carousels, the shout suspended from the cart of the headlong roller coaster, and it begins to count the months, the days it must wait before the caravan returns and a complete li~ can begin again."

For this small works assignment I took materials that I had at home and through experimentation (how each one work with one another) I was able to create to small shown below. I experiment with pastel tissue paper (paper mache), India ink, bleach and salt, repurposed canvas with woven colored string, coffee wash, and wax drippings, and pastel with India ink and bleach drippings on Mulberry paper.

The two pieces I enjoyed the most was creating the one with India ink, bleach drippings and adding salt to it and the pastel tissue paper mache. This one was my favorite because of the chemical reaction that occurred as I was when I added salt to the beach, gave my pieces a visually interesting affect which gave texture to it. I had no idea  no idea using the combination of these three materials could create something so aesthetically visually appealing. I appreciated using chemistry to create this artwork.

In addition, the paper mache piece I created using pastel colored tissue paper was pleasing to create because it brought back memories of creating collage's when I was younger. Using the paper mache technique I squished the tissue paper to give it texture and began layering them on top of each other over and over again. As the piece began to dry, I noticed that not only was the tissue paper drying with the texture I created but so was the paper because of the mache ( glue and water). Also, because it might be hard to notice I did embed recycled laundry cleaners plastic (used to protect clothing) within the piece but it got covered during the layering process.

With this piece I wanted to illustrate how one of the half cities is temporary when its period of sojourn is over they uproot it, dismantle it, and take it off, transplanting it to the vacant lots of another half-city.

1. Rapid Fire Material Analysis
  • What is your work made of?
Pastel tissue paper (paper mache), India ink, bleach and salt, repurposed canvas with woven colored string, coffee wash, and wax drippings, and pastel with India ink and bleach drippings on Mulberry paper.

  • 2. Rapid Fire Formal Analysis

    • Discuss the formal qualities of your work: i.e. principals of art and design
-Experimental mark making with India ink, bleach and salt
    - Abstraction of line use using various colors of thread
    - Rubbings/Stamping with pastel with India ink and bleach drippings on Mulberry paper
-Paper mache technique using pastel colored tissue paper (layering process)

  • 3. Interpretation of Contextual Referent

    • What context do the materials and form bring to your piece?
The context that the materials and form brings to my work discusses the two halves of the city Saphronia using: India ink, bleach and salt ( petroleum refinery that is removed), Pastel tissue paper (paper mache) (carousel, rollercoaster, carnival), repurposed canvas with woven colored string, coffee wash, and wax drippings ( illustrate how one of the half cities is temporary/uproot it, and transplanting it to the vacant lots of another half-city), pastel with India ink and bleach drippings on Mulberry paper (permanent portion if the city, peril, death, and danger).

  • 4. An Understanding of Place Through Conveyance of Mood
    • What mood and sense of place does the work convey through your use of form and materials?
The mood and sense of place that the work conveys through the use of form and materials depicts one part of the city Saphronia which is split between peril, death, and danger. The other half of Saphronia is made up of temporary lots. The part of the city that is permanent is made up of "Great rollercoaster with its steep humps" "Carousel with its chain spokes" "Ferris wheel of spinning cages" "Death ride". The temporary half of Saphronia is composed of stone, marble and cement, bank, factories, palaces, hospitals. This part of the city expresses removal, dismantlement, and uprooting.

    Small work: Street or Garden

For this assignment I chose to go to a public park close to my home which I enjoy spending time at rather to exercise with my friends, take a stroll, or go to the Farmer's Market on Sunday's.
I found a place to sit and observe my surroundings within the environment I was in, recorded all the sensory information I could take in: sight, sounds, scents, tastes, and textures for 30 minutes. After I drew for 30 minutes on site to create an imaginary artwork with the media of my choice.

I chose to use graphite as my medium because I felt that it best conveyed the vision I had for my artwork with incorporating the values and abstraction that I wanted depicted. The image is of an elevated view of the oak trees looking up from below. The pattern, movement and variety of branch thicknesses fascinated me and inspired me to draw and wonder about how it feels to be within nature at that height.

    Creature depiction

For this assignment we were to use our imagination and prior knowledge as our only source to create a creature to understand the role of early artists and illustrators as important interpreter/creators of visual culture, including scientific and anthropological fact. We were to chose a text option and recreate the created based on the description. I chose Creature #2 to recreate. As I was drawing the creature I began to put my prior knowledge from Marine science together and thought it had to be either a sea slug, or Spanish dancer.

    Creature description below:

    Creature #2—text dated 1839.
This [type of creature] is about five inches long; and is of a dirty yellowish color, veined with purple.  At the anterior extremity, it has two pairs of feelers; the upper ones of which resemble in shape the ears of a quadruped.  On each side of the lower surface, or foot, there is a broad membrane, which appears sometimes to act as a ventilator, in causing a current of water to flow over the dorsal branchiae.  It feeds on delicate seaweeds, which grow among the stones in muddy and shallow water; and I found in its stomach several small pebbles, as in the gizzards of birds.  This (creature), when disturbed, emits a very fine purplish-red fluid, which stains the water for the space of a foot around.  Besides this means of defense, an acrid secretion, which is spread over its body, causes a sharp, stinging sensation, similar to that produced by the (creature name).

Small work #4: Design your chair

Based on the chair I chose from the "Handbook of ornament" I communicated in four detailed drawings measuring 8"x 10" with the design I created which was influenced from the Norwegian/Swedish pattern type called "Rosemaling".

I created a Front view, Side view, Top view, and the Repeat Pattern based on how the chair would be depicted with the repeat pattern on the chair. The attitude or personality I wanted the chair to be portrayed as: ornate, and charming.
